They/Them
This movie is a confused and totally inconsistent picture that tries to find its identity. It aims to combine slasher horror with a socially conscious condemnation of LGBTQIA+ conversion camps. The film struggles in execution, providing few scares and relying largely on clichés and awkward dialogue, despite the audacious premise and the cast's sincere performances, particularly that of Theo Germaine. Although Kevin Bacon's portrayal of the camp's evil commander provides some mystery, the story skips about between campy antics and overbearing messaging without really committing to either. In the end, They/Them feels more like a lost chance than a significant genre revolution, despite its inclusive aims.
