Young Woman and the Sea
A touching biopic is about Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926. The movie centers on New Yorker Trudy as she competes in "indecent" trial competitions, learns to swim against her father's wishes, and negotiates her strict German immigrant father. The film, which was directed by Joachim Rønning, examines patriarchal attitudes in a glossy New York setting following World War II. All of it adds up to a truly moving story of an underdog, a la Seabiscuit, which will have you rooting for tenacious Trudy despite 10-foot waves, a shoal of stinging jellyfish, and a plague of obstructive men. Tears are the salty liquid on your face, not sea water.
