Captain America: Brave New World

An exhilarating at times absolutely crazy and a slightly serious experience the film captivates audiences in a way that only the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) can. It successfully thrusts Sam Wilson's character into a whirlwind of challenges and moral dilemmas compelling viewers to ponder whether he truly "deserves" the mantle of Captain America. This exploration not only serves as a personal journey for Sam but also opens up a broader discussion on pertinent political issues facing America today themes that are destined to be investigated in-depth in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Staying true to the well-known MCU formula the film does place somewhat less emphasis on character arcs compared to its predecessors which might leave some fans wanting more depth. Nevertheless  Anthony Mackie steps up to the plate with an impressive performance; his portrayal of Sam Wilson reaffirms his place in the superhero narrative  making it clear that he is here to stay. As for Harrison Ford? Well let's just say that his presence is a game-changer. His role as Thaddeus Ross who eventually transforms into the formidable Red Hulk introduces a new layer of complexity and excitement to the MCU and fans are eagerly anticipating his return in the forthcoming Thunderbolts* project.

However, it wouldn't be fair to overlook the film's fair share of drawbacks. Specifically, the third act suffers from an over-reliance on extended slow-motion sequences and somewhat unconvincing green screen effects which detract from the overall experience. These glaring flaws stand out  particularly in a franchise known for its high production values. Moreover the portrayal of the Leader while visually intriguing leaves much to be desired. Yes, he is meant to be green, the creative choices made render him exceptionally creepy bordering on unsettling. It's important to note that the promotional art for the film is quite misleading; what you'll actually see in the movie is a far cry from the polished images presented in the marketing materials. The reality is much more nuanced and for those expecting a straightforward representation prepare for a surprise! Overall while the film has its high points and moments of brilliance it also invites critique ensuring that it engages audiences on multiple levels.

*But we got the one character that fans wanted. 👀
